RE: Exteme TC'ing in a dually?

I've read on these forums and others about the horrors of off roading on dually tires, but now that I've been doing it for a couple years now I've come to find that most of the stories I've read have been just plain wrong. I'm even still using my street tires and yes I do air them down. And I've amazed quite a few folks with how far into the back country they've found me camping! Sure it's different then driving a tricked out 4x4 and I don't really expect to keep up with them on jeep trails but none the less I've gotten pretty far out on this setup. The biggest problem I've found is simple height clearance. Hard side campers are just plain tall compared to everything else so trees and rock overhangs are the biggest problems I've had to deal with. Best thing to do is get some off roading buddies to go with you and just see how well you can do. If you really get in a bad way they can help you get back out. Over time you'll get better at it and you'll find out what mods you really need versus what the arm chair off roaders will tell you that you need! That way you're only fixing what really needs fixing.

RE: Auto-rewind reel for the power cord

Ok, sorry to be so dense. Didn't get any sleep the last few nights. After going back and reading your post a bunch more times (brain dead today) and looking long and hard at the pics I now think I get it. The power junction doesn't swivel while connected. You pull out the shore line then plug the camper cord into that. Unplug then rewind the shore cord. Yes I'm slow today! Sorry to bug you about it! Now I get it, very simple way around a tough problem. Clever! Thanks, Jim.

RE: Auto-rewind reel for the power cord

How did you get the power junction to swivel? I'm thinking it must somehow to keep from pulling the cord loose.

RE: Truck Bed Storage?

Yeah it's pretty tall just to get into the camper. The camper came with a four step fold out entry steps so all I did was add a small foot step to make it easier for the girls to reach the first step. And watch your overall height, mine is about 13 feet to the top of the A/C. Out here it isn't a problem but if you mostly camp in heavy wooded areas it could be a challenge. I haven't had any problems but from time to time I do scrape some trees.
Also if you look around the forums you'll find a few others with clever ideas for mounting campers. One comes to mind his screen name is "woodshed", he has a camper on a service body. Another is "rouleau". Do a search for service body and you'll find a few others. You can PM them for questions or feel free to PM me too with any questions. If you're ever down in my area let me know and stop by and have a look at my rig to see what you think.

RE: Auto-rewind reel for the power cord

Clever idea! But that part number comes back to an air hose reel. I'll keep looking, I'd need to find the overall size to know if it will fit in my tiny cord box. Thanks for the tip!
Edit: Ok I get the idea now. Wish it was an already made reel, that's a little beyond my ability to create. I'll keep shopping around, there should be one somewhere!

RE: Truck Bed Storage?

Take a look at my sig, you'll see a similar idea to the service bed. A couple problems I found with the service bed design is depending on the camper you might have to make some cut outs or changes to the rear area of the service body to fit the camper on board. I went with the flat bed with boxes since it was a lot cheaper and didn't require any changes to the bed or boxes. There have a been a couple others on this forum that have done the service body thing so if you look around you'll see a couple on here. Also it looks like you live here with me in commie kalifornia so be aware of the MCPA******that the state is saying we fall under when the camper isn't on the truck. Just something to look into.

RE: 15" LCD TV/DVD combo for $167.99 - Runs on 12v

For what it's worth I've got the AudioVox version of this TV and my experience has been that they fail fairly quickly. Plus trying to watch that small of a screen for any length of time or a full length movie will give you a headache real fast. Go for a larger screen and use one of those "pocket inverters" to run it. Not much more power drain but a whole lot better viewing experience.

RE: Narrowing down the new camper (DONE!)

I just can't say enough great things about my 117DBL and have no doubt that the 126 is just that much grander!! The 126 has my vote!! But I do have to add that I'd heard that Okanagan had stopped producing their campers for a while until the market comes back. I'd check with them or you might have to find one somewhere around the country and go get it. But it would still be worth it! Good luck with what ever you choose, judging by your list you won't go wrong with any of them.

RE: Getting a customized TC built

Before I bought my camper I had talked with Alaskan Campers and they were willing to build, within reason, anything that I wanted. I had lots of changes I wanted made including making it longer and adding a shower. No problem they said. I've give them a look and talk to them about what you want, you might find they can do exactly what you need. Used to be they would build you what you wanted and would even name it after you!

RE: How many full-timers and full-timer wanna be's?

Hard to say, I'm living in my camper full time and yes it's by choice. But I'm still working full time getting ready to retire in a couple years. Full time/part time?? lol! I'm confused! But loving it anyway no matter what you call it!!!

RE: Holding tanks prep question

Wow! You guys really take this holding tank stuff way to seriously!! I think you're over thinking and over working a pretty simple part of your camping. Put your time and effort into some other part of the rig that could really benefit you. I guess if you're really into doing extra work then use the GEO method. If you want a "no brainer" and would rather enjoy your travels instead of fussing with your holding tank then pour the blue/green/brown or other colored stuff into the tank and forget about it! I've been using the "blue" stuff for a year and a half full time and it works just fine. Happy camping!

RE: Bryce, then Kodachrome SP to North Rim Grand Canyon

Been down part of that route, starting from Bryce then going into Kodachrome park. Beautiful views and very lonely. Only went part of the way (can't recall how far) but the part we did was paved 2 lane and reasonably good condition. Wished we could have done the entire route as it looked pretty nice. I'd make sure to have a full tank of fuel and water with empty holding tanks just in case. Other then about 2 cars driving past us as they were leaving we didn't see another person for the rest of the drive. Very nice!

RE: Here's an Idea for the police....

put a remote valve on the black water tank that I can trip from the cab, with a 90 degree elbow aimed backwards:B:B Plus, it saves you dumping later.
Mike
I like it!!! I'm going out shopping for remote valves tonight. Might add the grey too, just to keep the pipes clean of course. I wonder where I could find one of those spreader tips, you know like they use on the water trucks??

RE: Please enlighten this dim bulb regarding generators

That generator is much to small for your needs. With nothing else running it still won't even get full power to the battery charger in the camper. So if everything is switched off you'll still need over twice as long as normal to recharge your batteries. You'll need a larger generator to pull this one off.

RE: Happijack Electric jack question

Every once in a while my Hapi Jacs do this very same thing I just consider it another part of the crapi jac experience.
Same here!
Yep, same thing for me too. Sometimes I think it's been abducted by aliens and they're trying to figure it how to use it to take over the world. It's just got a mind of it's own at times. You just have to live with it, at least until we can afford Atwoods.

RE: Taking camper off at the camp site

I take mine off sometimes when at RV parks and use the truck for play. I lower the jacks all the way down and then use them to level the camper. Never had any problems doing it although a couple times the grass I was on was wet and one of the legs would sink in. Use large blocks to help avoid that happening and you'll be fine.
